From 1837 to 1857, "Mr. and Mrs. Burwell's School for Young Ladies" educated more than  200 girls in the home of the Rev. Robert Burwell and his wife Anna.  The school's rigorous curriculum embraced "all the branches of a good English education."

As a young woman, she was an enslaved and mistreated servant in the Burwell household, but later bought her freedom and became a successful dressmaker, an activist and author -- and a witness to history.
